Digital Signage 101

The true power of digital signage is its ability to deliver high-impact, relevant messages to targeted audiences when it counts.

Royal Caribbean Spa & Fitness Deployment

Dynamic signage. In-store TV. Narrowcasting. Branded Media. Whatever you may call it digital signage is becoming an increasingly critical part of business today. From retail to hospitality to education, organizations of all types need the ability to reach a target audience with relevant messaging.

The effectiveness of mass media is falling due to technologies like DVR and a population that is desensitized to mass advertising. Customers now demand that the messages they see be relevant and timely to grab their attention.

Digital signage is a medium that allows you to deliver content of any type to any number of end points efficiently and effectively. Because the platform is digital you can target messaging to regions, stores or even to individual signs based on schedules and event triggers.

Whether you need to promote this weeks big sale, drive visitors to the hotel restaurant, or present local information on a college campus, digital signage systems give you flexible control to reach your audience.

The Advantage of Networked Digital Signage

Why should you go digital? After all, isn't it more expensive and complicated?

Digital signage systems can not only be more cost effective, but offer many advantages over traditional static print signage and DVD based systems.

  • Eliminate printing, distribution and installation costs
  • Ability Change content nearly instantaneously
  • Reuse the same physical space to deliver multiple messages
  • Ensures compliance at the store level with promotional signage
  • Motion and light in media is proven to draw more attention
  • Increased recall compared to static signage*
  • Event triggered media allows signs to update with relevant content
  • Ability to regionalize or localize signage
  • No physical media to distribute or install

Components of a Digital Signage System

A typical digital signage system consists of the following components:

Player

A digital signage player is the device that stores and plays back media to one or multiple connected displays. Players typically come in one of three forms; dedicated hardware appliances, proprietary cards, or software based systems. Nanonation's digital signage solutions are based on the latter (software solution). We believe this offers our clients the most flexibility in content playback, ability to integrate with external systems and the advantages of open standards for servicing and replacing hardware.

Display

The display is the screen or series of screens that shows the media played by the player. Displays can take many forms include plasma and LCD TVs, projection systems, LCD monitors, LED boards or even multi-screen video walls.

Content Server

The content server is where your media (content) lives both as a backup and the staging point for distribution to your network of players. Content servers can exist as a hosted model or locally within your network. There are typically two forms of distribution from the content server to the player; push or pull. In a push system the server connects to or pushes the content down to the players. In a pull system, like Nanonation's solutions, content downloads are initiated by the player. This can offer greater control over local bandwidth utilization and makes the system more firewall friendly.

Management Software

For every sign system there is a tool or series of tools used to schedule content, create layouts and maintain your signage network. The software can exist as a package which is installed on specific computers (similar to installing a product like Microsoft Office) or as web based tools accessible from multiple locations/users.
